Balbir Singh Bakhshi, who was previously in the Diplomatic Service, is now the Chairman of Greenwich Home Start and an Executive Committee member of Greenwich Link. He is the Trustee for the Bexleyheath Multifaith Forum, the South London Interfaith Group and Greenwich Multi Faith Forum. He is also a Trustee of MIND of Bexleyheath. Besides being a GAVS Trustee he currently also sits on the board of the New Charlton residents Association.
He is also a School Governor. Every year he takes part in the sponsored Crusaid’s walk for life which is 10 KMs long and raises money for the people living on AIDS and other life threatening diseases.
He has also served as a Director and Trustee in the Citizen Advice Bureaux (Woolwich and Eltham), Panel Member (Chairing meetings) of the Greenwich Youth Offending Team. Besides Balbir is the active Committee member of the United Nations Association (Greenwich and Blackheath Branch) and takes active part in the fund raising activities and other social activities.
Due to his self-less interest in the Community work, and his role as a Critical Friend in some other organisations, he was honoured with the award of “Ambassador of Peace” by the famous International Women Organisation in the 5 Star Hotel in the presence of about 250 delegates all over the world. The award was given by the member of the Royal Family of North Korea. Only three persons were chosen for this coveted award including him.
He was also nominated for the nation wide award and ultimately in 2007 was nominated for the Heroes Award 2007 by the local newspaper which carried his more than half a page photo and wrote about 350 words in his appreciation.
